Here are some highlights from the minutes from the 11/10/2008 Transportation Committee meeting for Community Board 8 regarding the tram construction:
- RIOC has awarded the tram construction contract to Poma.
- The tram will be out of service from June 22, 2009 to mid-December 2009.
- The $3 million available from the budgeted $25 million will be used for the redesign of the existing "functional" tram stations.
- Current plans call for minimal usage of cranes and lane closures along the 59th Street Bridge and alongside the tram station at 60th Street and Second Avenue.
- There are concerns expressed over the closure of bike lanes in the area.
- RIOC will pay for traffic agents to alleviate any traffic problems.
- Possibility of night work for two weeks.
- During the tram closure, RIOC will be running Red Buses during the morning rush hour to Queensboro Plaza. Also Red Buses will be running service to/from Manhattan between 10 am to 4 pm and 7 pm to Midnight.
