Community Review

AccessRI will be presenting a draft of our accessibility study for community review. We invite you to participate in this discussion about our recommendations for the island.

You will have two chances to participate:

Tuesday, March 31 at the RI Senior Center from 7-9pm or

Saturday, April 4 at the RI Senior Center from 10am-noon

The tram will close down for upgrades after the July 4th holiday.

FOLLOW UP: December Open House

The December Access RI Open House was a huge success. Over thirty Roosevelt Island residents came out to meet the studio group and share their concerns. Some of the following issues and concerns are echoed from our October townhall meeting and our community survey, which illustrates the pressing concerns of Roosevelt Island residents. The issues and concerns are listed in no particular order.

- F-train service inadequate

- Roosevelt Island roads & sidewalks in poor condition for disabled residents

- Struggling and depressed Main Street retail

- Island emergency evacuation

- Governance and accountability of RIOC

- MTA Subway and Red Bus disability access

The Access RI studio team will continue to compile issues and concerns of Roosevelt Island residents while we develop solutions for the most frequently occurring issues and problems. More to come!

Roosevelt Island Community Survey

The survey covers many aspects of life on Roosevelt Island including housing, healthcare, transportation, recreation, retail and public safety. The purpose of the survey is to inform an accessibility plan that will address the major issues identified by the community.

Access RI Studio Team to Host an Open House

This is our second community event on Roosevelt Island. This open house is being held so the Roosevelt Island community can meet and talk with us in a small, casual setting. At the same time, we will give the community an opportunity to take surveys, give an oral history of their Roosevelt Island experience and illustrate their perceptions of the island on maps. There will be activities for children too. Refreshments will be served.

When: Saturday, December 6, 2008 -- 10 am to 2 pm
Where: Good Shepherd Community Center, 543 Main Street

Stop by any time, and remember children are welcome!

UPDATE: Future Tram Construction

Here are some highlights from the minutes from the 11/10/2008 Transportation Committee meeting for Community Board 8 regarding the tram construction:

- RIOC has awarded the tram construction contract to Poma.

- The tram will be out of service from June 22, 2009 to mid-December 2009.

- The $3 million available from the budgeted $25 million will be used for the redesign of the existing "functional" tram stations.

- Current plans call for minimal usage of cranes and lane closures along the 59th Street Bridge and alongside the tram station at 60th Street and Second Avenue.

- There are concerns expressed over the closure of bike lanes in the area.

- RIOC will pay for traffic agents to alleviate any traffic problems.

- Possibility of night work for two weeks.

- During the tram closure, RIOC will be running Red Buses during the morning rush hour to Queensboro Plaza. Also Red Buses will be running service to/from Manhattan between 10 am to 4 pm and 7 pm to Midnight.
